Mighty Mouse Problems
Yes, they are small, but mice can wreak havoc on homes and businesses. They may carry diseases, such as hantavirus, which are spread through their feces, urine, saliva, and nesting materials. With hantavirus, early symptoms in humans include fatigue, fever, and muscle aches. Many people also experience headaches, dizziness, chills, nausea, and vomiting. As the illness progresses, symptoms include significant difficulty breathing and coughing.
At a time when we have a heightened awareness of health issues, and the importance of proper sanitation, taking chances with your health, as well as that of your family, friends, employees, customers, etc, is just not worth it.
Mice can also trigger and worsen respiratory problems. They carry a bacteria called mycoplasma, which can cause breathing trouble and even lead to chronic respiratory disease. Other bacteria, such as streptococcus and pasteurella, may cause pneumonia. Mice are especially dangerous for folks who have preexisting health issues, the elderly, and young children.
If that weren’t enough, mice also chew through insulation and wiring. In the case of wiring, this leaves your home vulnerable to electrical fires. Experts estimate that about 20% of undetermined house and structure fires are caused by mice and rats.
Again, that is a risk that is not worth taking. So how can you rid your space of mice?
DIY: An Effective Mice-Control Approach?
Maybe. But let’s talk about a DIY approach that we do not recommend: poison. Leaving poison for mice may seem like a simple enough solution. They eat it, and that’s it. But poison may be accessible to pets or even to children, and this is highly dangerous. Further, when mice ingest poison, they essentially bleed to death internally and perish in an inhumane way. Typically, they find a hidden spot, such as in a wall cavity or duct to do so. Let’s just say that this leaves you with a not-so-pleasant odor.
Now, live traps can work - but then you have to deal with the mouse itself. Many people are (understandably) squeamish about handling mice, alive or dead. Even if you are not, releasing a mouse outside is likely to lead to one of two outcomes: it will immediately find its way back into your home or it will die of starvation, dehydration, or exposure in the wild. It is not the “humane” solution you may have thought.
What about wooden traps? These can be effective if used properly. Set traps at entry points and “hot spots,” such as underneath kitchen cabinets or at the base of the wall where you see a small gap and have heard activity. You need to check the traps daily, and if you catch a few, keep setting them. Where there is one, there are many.
You must be careful to keep pets and children away from traps and to dispose of any remains immediately.
Trapping does help, but if you do not take a more comprehensive approach, you are just inviting mice to come into your home. In other words, you may have taken care of a few of the current pests, but if the door is wide open, the problem continues.
Professional Mice Extermination
Why is it so important to have professional mice extermination help?
- Even if you trap some mice, there are likely more (including litters of pups) in the wall cavities, attics, etc. Further, if you do not take steps to prevent infestation, the problem will continue.
- It is safer. The Rid-a-Bug team is committed to the safety and health of your home, business, and everyone who walks through its doors. Our solutions do not put people or pets at risk.
- It is humane. Many DIY mice removal methods are not humane, as we discussed with poison and even live trapping. We understand that while you do not want pests living in your space, you do not want to act in a way that is unnecessarily cruel to the mice. We agree 100%.
- It is effective. Our team has the experience, knowledge, and tools to ensure that your mice problem is a thing of the past. But it is also important to prevent the problem from recurring. This is why we also offer crawl space encapsulation and insulation services: these are both effective in keeping pests out.
Mice are a big problem for many home and business owners, but you do not have to live with the unwanted “guests” or the dangers they bring into your space. Contact Rid-a-Bug today to learn more about effective, safe, humane mice extermination.
