Common Winter Pests in the Carolinas and Virginia
Some insects like mosquitoes may take the winter off, but there are still several other pests you and your family will encounter throughout the winter. Some of the most common include:
1. Spiders
While they are most common during fall, spiders will hang out in your home throughout the cold months. There are only four types of venomous spiders in our area: Brown Recluses, Black Widows, Yellow Sac Spiders, and False Black Widows. Brown Recluses and Black Widows can be a serious concern for your family, but no one likes any spider making themselves at home in your house.
2. Termites
Termites do upwards of $5 billion in property damage each year. While many homeowners think termites are a problem for spring and summer; however, there are many species that remain active through the coldest times of the year. If you have even the slightest suspicion of termites in your home, you need to contact a professional exterminator immediately.
3. Ants
Sugary baked goods are commonly associated with the holidays and winter. Ants seem to know when they can get a tasty snack in your home. In our area, they are not just a warm-weather pest. Beware of carpenter ants, as they can cause substantial damage to your home’s flooring and wood.
4. Bed Bugs
If you find yourself traveling or welcoming relatives for the holidays, your home is susceptible to the presence of bedbugs. They hide in sheets and blankets, clothing, and suitcases, waiting to unpack and move into your home. Bed bugs might leave tiny sores on you, and tiny red or brown spots on your bedding and furniture.
5. Stink Bugs
These beetles are one of the most annoying fall and winter pests. If they feel threatened, they release a smelly substance that makes everyone wish they were gone.
6. Other Beetles and Bugs
Ladybugs, beetles, and many other insects can find their way into your house during winter.
What Can You Do About Winter Pests?
If there are pests all year long, does that mean you just have to live with them? Not at all. Here are a few things you can do to reduce the presence of your least favorite winter guests:
Keep the kitchen clean.
Make sure you sweep or vacuum crumbs off the floor. Keep boxes sealed and clean behind appliances to avoid attracting ants and roaches.
Wash sheets and bedding.
If you have guests during winter or do any traveling at all, make sure you wash your bedding, suitcases, and clothes immediately. Hot water is preferred.
Seal entryways.
If you have drafty windows or doors, cracks in your foundation, or ventilation entry points, you can expect to welcome some winter pests. Have these areas sealed for better energy efficiency and reduced pests.
Watch your Christmas tree.
Your Christmas tree may be attracting pests. Keep an eye on it for signs of infestation and remove it long as soon as possible the holiday ends.
Reduce moisture.
Some pests love moisture. If you have excess moisture in parts of your home, you could be asking for ants, termites, and other pests to invade. Make sure you dry excess moisture and correct the source of it.
